5 star book predictions

welcome to a literary latte

Being a book blogger especially, I am constantly adding new books to my tbr that I see featured on my blog feed, and within that, I have my expectations about how I’ll find them. Some books I don’t mind being just average, but there are some books that I just know that I will adore them and give 5 stars. And so, after watching Joel @ Fictional Fates five star predictions video, I thought I would write my own!

malibu rising by taylor jenkins reid

Until I watched Joel @ Fictional Fates ‘s recent video (linked above) I had no idea that this is existed which is honestly a CRIME because you just know that this is going to be a 5 star read. I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in early June and it quickly became one of my all time favourite books. The writing was just so incredible and atmospheric and Evelyn Hugo was the most iconic character. I’m not sure if Malibu Rising will be as good but I’m still convinced it will be a 5 star read because it has everything you could want from a book. Celebrities from the American elite, secrets and dramatic scandals – sign me up please.

today, tonight, tomorrow by rachel lynn solomon

Academic rivalry and enemies to lovers? A competitive game where they’re simultaneously trying to beat each other and beat the rest of their year? Yes please!
I also read The Ex Talk by the author a week or so ago and loved it which was another enemies to lovers with so much tension and angst, so I’m sure this will be another 5 star read!

darling by k. ancrum

This one is a Peter Pan retelling featuring a one night whirlwind adventure and even though that’s all I know about it – it sounds incredible. I’ve seen many a positive review for both this one and the authors other novels (especially The Weight of Our Stars and The Wicker King). I’m hoping this is a really fast paced and atmospheric read and I can’t wait to get to it.

★★★★★

counting down with you by mashie bhuiyan

I’ve seen this one mentioned on book tok and around the book blogosphere so often and my expectations are high because it features fake dating (!!) which is one of my all time favourite tropes so I can guarantee you this will be 5 star read.

our violent ends by chloe gong

These Violent Delights (the first book in this series) was INCREDIBLE. You can check out my full review of that here but to summarise: Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai with rival gangs, an lovers to enemies to lovers romance, atmospheric writing and impeccable world building. With how book 1 ended I already know that book 2 will be another 2021 favourite and I am so excited for its release in November!

ace of spades by faridah àbíké-Íyímídé

Another one that I’m really excited to read because I’ve seen so many bloggers and booktubers raving about this one! I think? that I mentioned it in this blog post but Ace of Spades is a dark academia thriller featuring anonymous texting and dark secrets, but it also tackles other important topics like racism in academics. Definitely think this will be a 5 star read and I’m looking forward to reading this one.

★★★★★

when night breaks by janella angeles

I have to admit, I don’t remember loads about book 1 in the Kingdom of Cards series ‘Where Dreams Descend’ (definitely need to reread) but I know that I flew through it and absolutely loved it. I know it features a magic and illusions competition and it was super atmospheric so I definitely think I’ll love the sequel and I’m excited to get to it. The cover is also beautiful, plus book 1 ended in a cliffhanger (which is always so annoying when the next book isn’t released:).

legendborn by tracy deonn

I mentioned Legendborn in my recent book haul but after seeing even more positive reviews and mentions, I’m convinced that this is going to be a five star read. The novel features evil demons, a mystery behind a death, a group hunting the demons and a romance. Cannot wait to get to this one!

the invisible life of addie larue by v.e.schwab

I’ve read both This Savage Song and Our Dark Duet by V.E. Schwab and they are two of my all-time favourite books so I really want to read more from the author. Her writing is just incredible and so atmospheric, with amazing world building too. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue follows a historical curse to be forgotten and a desperation to be remembered which sounds really intriguing!
Okay to update, I just went to the GoodReads page to add a link and now I’m torn because the book reviews have been mixed but the overall rating on is 4.28 stars so hopefully it will still be really good, even if it’s not the full package. I do also want to read Vicious from the author though and A Darker Shade of Magic because the reviews have been amazing for those two too!

★★★★★

And that’s all of the books! I’m so excited to get to all of these ASAP because they all sound so good and have been really hyped on bookish social media! I’ll also 100% be doing an update post once I’ve read all of these (or maybe I’ll do them as mini reviews in sets of 3) to let you guys know how I found them!

Have you read any of the books I mentioned? & If so, what did you think?
What books do you think you’ll give 5 stars too?

I finished Counting Down With You (5 stars) and am halfway through Malibu Rising (incredible, pretty sure it will be 5 stars too) so it’s all going great so far! 5. i loved k. ancrum’s the wicker king and it was a super easy 5 stars. i hope to love darling as well, especially because i am obsessed with peter pan as a concept, and if there is one author out there i trust to write a retelling of it, it has to be her!

i did read counting down with you, and unfortunately i didn’t like it very much. BUUTTTT I hope you do have better luck with it and it does turn out to be a 5 stars!

i have legend born and addie la rue on my TBR too, but both of these titles are so loooooong. i’m not used to reading such long books, especially fantasy, so i really don’t know if/when i’ll ever get to them, though they do look AMAZING! everyone i’ve seen who’s read legendborn has given it at least a 4 star, so i think you have great luck of loving it too!

    1. Ooh that’s so good to hear! I can’t wait to try out K Ankrum’s writing because I’ve heard nothing but positive things!

I finished Counting Down With You yesterday and thankfully it did end up being a 5 star read for me! Or maybe 4/4.5 if I’m being less generous – still a success though! I flew through it and it was exactly the cute but kind of cliche book I was looking for. Sorry that it fell short of your expectations though!

Ahh yeah I get you they are definitely longer reads which is probably why it’s taken me so long to get round to them. I always find longer fantasy/magical realism novels a bit intimidating (hence why I tend to stick to the tried and true YA contemporary haha) but I’m sure they’ll be amazing!! Like you said the reviews have been so positive, especially for Legendborn so hopefully I’ll love it once I convince myself to brave the length haha.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting Lais!

  6. Ahhh so many of these are five star predictions for me as well! Darling sounds absolutely amazing and I need it now, just like I need to read something by Rachel Lynn Solomon soon! Legendborn is the book I’m most excited for though (I have a *slight* obsession with King Arthur)! Lovely post ❤

  7. I also think that Addie Larue and Our Violent Ends would be 5 star reads for me. I just hope that both of these books don’t break my heart.
